Y6 Enrichment Activities
Red Cross Visit
We feel that it is important that the children feel confident to give first aid if they need to. We invited the British Red Cross into school to work with Year 6, training them in everyday first aid so they are equipped to stay calm and help in an emergency.

- Burns
- Heavy bleeding
- Seizures
- Drinking hazardous substances
- How to determine if someone is breathing
- How to treat someone who is unconscious
“I learnt how to keep myself, my friends and my family safe. If an emergency does happen
I have more confidence to sort it out until help comes.” - Maddie Y6
Virgin Make £5 Grow
As part of the Virgin Make £5 Grow scheme, the Year 6 pupils each received a £5 loan. They formed enterprise teams and developed their own product ideas and activities to try and increase their £5.
On the afternoon of Tuesday 4th July, the children opened their small business stalls to the rest of the school (with a special 30 minute slot for the Year 6 parents/carers).
Stalls included a range of hot and cold foods from around the world, refreshments, delicious home baked cakes, car washing, a nail salon, ice lollies, pick and mix, mini Olympics and even a fidget spinner competition.
The afternoon was a huge success with the children making a very impressive profit of £486! The children decided to use their money to enjoy a meal together at Cosmo. They also kindly donated part of their earnings to present school with special friendship benches for the playgrounds to remember them by as they journey on to secondary school.
A massive well done Year 6!

Galleries of Justice
Years 5 and 6 had the opportunity to visit the Galleries of Justice Museum to learn about crime and punishment and our justice system. They took part in a mock trial, role playing characters in the trial and then working to question these characters in role. The children also looked around the old prison and saw what happens during an arrest.
The children were encouraged to think about the crimes committed and possible punishments that can be given out in a magistrate’s court, to people as young as some of the children themselves!
Here are some of the children’s thoughts about their experience:

Here are some of the children’s thoughts about their experience:
“I learned that there are lots of different types of courts and one of these is a magistrate court.”
“Our visit to the Galleries of Justice has taught me not to commit a crime even if one of my friends forces me to because I will be punished.”
“I was shocked to find out that once you are 10 years old you can be arrested for any crime you commit!”
“I learned what magistrates are and that they decide on the punishment of a defendant.”
Red Cross Anti-Stigma Workshop
During our anti-stigma afternoon, the children explored how negative attitudes towards individuals or groups of people can create prejudice and lead to negative actions and discrimination. After focusing on the effect of the media, the children looked at ways to avoid developing stereotypical ideas of their own. They also watched short film clips that delved into the lives of different groups of people and highlighted that we should not make quick judgments about others.
SAFETY ZONE
On Friday 23rd September, Year 6 took part in Safety Zone at the National Water Sports Centre. This was a very important project that provided opportunities for children to learn about safety and the prevention of accidental injuries in a realistic outdoor setting. The children met safety experts, including Fire Fighters, Road Safety Officers, Police Officers, and St John’s Ambulance personnel. They were presented with risky situations and learned how to deal with them in a controlled and supervised environment.
Year 6 also learned how to deal with someone if they are unconscious - how to resuscitate them and put them into the recovery position.
There was also a fun activity, where we visited the ‘mock-up’ home of a man who was very untidy and unaware of hazards in the home. Our job was to identify all the potential dangers and explain why they were hazardous.

Our Year 5 Work...
Lights, Camera APP-tion Film Festival
A big well done to Kitty, Theo, Saleem, Faith, Ava and Diana from Year 1, and Bob and Tiba from Year 5 who entered the Lights, Camera APP-tion Film Festival at the New Art Exchange. Their iPad projects were showcased on the big screen and viewed by school children and parents from all over the city. Year 1 entered their independent work on ‘The Great Fire of London’ using the Lego Movie app and Year 5 used iMovie to make a news report based on the Mount Merapi eruption.
A Hot Air Balloon Experience
Into Film Festival
To celebrate the Into Film Festival in November, some children from Year 5 and 6 visited the Broadway cinema to watch the pupil premiere of the new film 'He Named Me Malala'. This film tells the tale of a young girl in Pakistan who fought for equality and an education for all. The children were also able to see a live question and answer session with Malala Yousafzai herself!
Black History Get Up Stand Up Tour
As part of Black History Week, Years 5 and 6 took part in an audio-visual installation at the Galleries of Justice, based on global civil rights, justice and injustice.
It took us on a sensory journey through the dungeons, which some of us found a little spooky, to discover about the lives of those involved in civil rights, both past and present. We also learnt about Mohammed Ali, and how he helped support the rights of black people in America.
This week, we have also been lucky enough to taste some authentic Caribbean food that Kady’s dad cooked for the whole of the class. For most of us, it was our first taste of salt fish fritters and dumplings, and we thought they were yummy!
Allotment
Recently, we went down to the allotment to harvest some fruit and vegetables. It was great to see the how the crops had turned out because we planted a lot of them last year. We made plum crumble, which was delicious, and the kitchen used lots of the vegetables for school dinners. We all love going to the allotment and getting our hands dirty!
