Y6 History
Year 5 and 6 World War One Workshop
During our WW1 workshop day, the children were offered a unique hands-on approach which brought the topic to life. Information regarding the war was shared by ‘Corporal Parsons’ and ‘Private Parsons’ in a first person context with authentic uniform/costume and the use of accurate historical working props and scenery. The children explored recruitment and training of WW1 soldiers, trench life and daily routines and frontline medical treatment of the wounded. The children also enjoyed using enquiry skills during engaging object handling sessions. The workshop gave the children a more insightful understanding of the conditions the soldiers faced and by handling replica objects, they had the time and opportunity to reflect on the importance of different weapons, armour and techniques used at the time.
Stickman Visit
Stickman visited on the Monday of Black History Week and set us off with an exciting assembly where we learned about some of the influential black people in the world.
Year 6 then worked with Stickman to create poems based around the idea of equality and human rights.

Enjoying Food During Black History Week
Kady's Dad prepared us some food that is traditionally Bajan and was very tasty - thank you!
Jason and the Golden Fleece
As part of their history topic, Year 6 worked with the Partake history group to re-enact the Ancient Greek legend 'Jason and the Golden Fleece'. They will follow this by writing their own versions of the legend this week in English.
Ancient Greek Olympics
Years 5 and 6 took part in their own 'Ancient Greek Olympics'. They were split into 'city states' to compete and each learned about the way their city state would behave and compete during the Olympics.
Each child participated in one sporting event, such as boxing, race in armour or javelin, but we also learned that the Games were about more than just sporting events. They were for enjoyment, to celebrate religion and to prepare men for war! |

During our closing ceremony, winning athletes were presented with not gold medals, but wreaths made of leaves like those given in ancient times.
Our Year 5 Work...
Roman day
|
Our recent Roman day was fantastic! We had fun getting into the tortoise formation and protecting ourselves against flying rocks, thrown by opposing team, the barbarians! The girls team won, as only one of their soldiers was hit! We realised just how hard it would have been for Roman soldiers, carrying metal shields as well as their heavy armour, which weighed up to 20kg.
We had a go at playing Roman games, and learned about their architecture, like their famous arch ways and aqueducts. By handling lots of artefacts, we learned a great deal about their lifestyle, and their keen interest in keeping clean. Did you know that they used wee to help wash their clothes? |
At the end of the day, Oliwier and Taybah were transformed into Maximus and Porche,
who were wealthy Romans. We think they look fabulous!
Lincoln Museum
As part of our Stone Age topic, we visited Lincoln Museum where we had a fabulous day! We took part in lots of activities, including a drama showing the changes throughout the Stone Age era, an archaeological dig where we searched for hidden artefacts, and we looked at an exhibition where we saw a real-life prehistoric boat, along with lots of other artefacts.

Spoken language - History lesson
As part of the new curriculum, there is an emphasis on spoken language, through the development of pupils’ confidence and competence in spoken language and listening skills.
During one of our history lessons, we discussed the changes throughout the Stone Age period and thought about how the changes had an impact on their lives. After our discussion, we ordered the changes from the smallest to the biggest, giving reasons for our choices. We had to work in groups, which meant we had to listen to each other and be confident enough to share our own ideas. |
