‘It’s all about the money’ – Financial Education in Year 6
Visitors from the TDX group came to St Mary’s to work with Year 6 on financial education. The children worked in groups to budget a monthly salary, allocating money for essentials such as food, utilities, travel, rent and savings, then further money for clothes, going out, holidays and other items.
Following this, the children were hit with ‘unforeseen circumstances’, such as needing to buy clothes for an interview or their washing machine breaking, and they had to decide how to deal with these difficult but very real situations!
The visitors then helped us to understand the many different methods of paying for things that are available, like credit cards, store cards, debit cards and paying by cash, as well as the pros and cons of each. They also explained some of the jargon related to these methods.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the session and it provided some valuable real-life advice. They said:

“It was a fun session and a good insight into what we might have to face when we’re adults.” - Bob
“I think it was a great way for children to learn about budgeting, and how to use money when we’re older. I have learned a lot about it and would love for them to come again.” - Roma
